Hatteras Yachts

Hatteras Yachts was founded by Willis Slane in 1959 in High Point, North Carolina. Slane, a textile magnate and passionate fisherman, sought to build a fiberglass yacht capable of withstanding the challenging conditions of Cape Hatteras. This led to the creation of the 41-foot Hatteras Knit Wits, considered the first fiberglass yacht of its size. The company established its manufacturing operations in New Bern, North Carolina, benefiting from its proximity to water for testing and delivery.

Throughout its history, Hatteras has been recognized for its use of fiberglass construction techniques. Early innovations included the development of advanced hull designs and construction methods that aimed to enhance durability and performance. The company expanded its model lines beyond sportfishing yachts to include motor yachts and convertibles, catering to a broader market segment.

Over the decades, Hatteras Yachts has undergone several changes in ownership. It was acquired by AMF in 1968, Brunswick Corporation in 2001, and Versa Capital Management in 2013, before being purchased by White River Marine Group, a subsidiary of Bass Pro Shops, in 2021. Each ownership change influenced the company's strategic direction and product development.

Initially, Hatteras focused on crafting robust sportfishing vessels. Over time, the company diversified its portfolio to include a range of motor yachts, offering different layouts and amenities to suit various boating preferences. The design philosophy generally emphasizes seaworthiness, spacious interiors, and a balance between performance and comfort. While maintaining a focus on fiberglass construction, Hatteras has incorporated advancements in materials and manufacturing processes throughout its production history.
